Abstract | A new type of DC breaker, based on standard SF6 AC circuit breakers with auxiliary circuits will now be used in the Three Gorges-Changzhou HVDC Project instead of the old type based on oil-minimum breakers. To create the current zero necessary for arc extinction, a passive auxiliary circuit is used for lower currents, and an active circuit at higher currents. The passive circuit comprises a capacitor in series with a reactor, and a parallel non-linear resistor, across the breaker; in the active circuit the capacitor is precharged and inserted at a suitable time. The paper describes theoretical models and testing of the new breakers, and how they are implemented in reality. |
